Critical Importance

Our Mission: To Lead Horry County's Efforts in Attracting, Growing and Retaining Sustainable Businesses that Create Jobs.

The Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation (MBREDC) was founded to function as a vital, comprehensive resource for location and expansion assistance, and to facilitate development programs throughout Horry County. We raise the profile of greater Myrtle Beach as a prime business location, we unite key parties in the public and private sectors to accelerate economic growth, and we diversify the economy by attracting suitable and sustainable industries.

The MBREDC has more than 170 active members.

No matter where you live in the U.S., there’s a common challenge – a four-letter word that communities are facing today: JOBS. It’s a challenge that is especially critical here in Myrtle Beach and Horry County, where the unemployment rate is about 6.9%. That’s an existing workforce, along with the thousands of young men and women that graduate each year from our nationally recognized public school system, Coastal Carolina University, and Horry Georgetown Technical College. We invest in these young men and women and, unfortunately, too often see them leave our community for places of “better opportunity.”

Not if we have anything to say about it. It’s crucial for our leadership to create jobs and opportunities right here on the Grand Strand. And it takes an aggressive team of people focused full-time on economic development to recruit companies that will invest here and provide those employment opportunities.

That’s where we at the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation (MBREDC) come in. Job creation is far and away our biggest obligation. Though tourism will continue to be our largest economic engine, providing jobs in manufacturing, aerospace, technology and other areas will provide the community with economic diversification. Good economic development will create year-round stable jobs, and strengthen and insulate the economy. It will also provide tax revenues for our school system, county and municipal governments that will allow more resources for education, fire, police and other services. The more tax revenue paid by industry allows for less tax liability for homeowners across Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand.

Horry County’s economy continues to thrive. Tourism numbers are up, despite a national economic recovery. Major construction is under way county-wide on our transportation infrastructure. Our academic institutions continue to expand with campus construction additions and record enrollment. Persistent unemployment continues to be high, however, and Horry County’s per capita income and average wages dramatically lack the state and national averages. A concerted effort to continue to attract high-paying companies and entrepreneurs will pay medium to long-term dividends for our community.
